The Unique New Zealand Kiwi Bird

What is a native bird to New Zealand, that has wings but can not fly? Yes, a Kiwi. The common kiwi is the size of an average chicken, the female kiwi is often larger than the male kiwi. Commonly the kiwi is brown in colour and has wings, however these wings are not strong enough to lift the kiwi and make them fly. The kiwi is related to a group of larger flightless birds, such as the moa, emu and the ostrich. The kiwi however is the smallest flightless bird. Many years ago the population of kiwis was over 12 million, but now with many threats the kiwi population is less than 100,000 left. The kiwi is now endangered. With five different species of kiwi they can be found all across New Zealand from the top of the North Island all the way down to Stewart Island. In order to understand the kiwi, we need to have an understanding of their diet, and predators to ensure they are able to survive. Such as, their dietary needs.

Diet
Kiwi’s have a great range of food. From seeds to amphibians, kiwis are omnivores which means they eat both meat and plants. They eat invertebrates, grubs, berries, worms and leaves. They also don’t need to drink a lot of water because the worms provide 85% of the water kiwis need. Luckily New Zealand is rich in earthworms so they are easy to access and berries, amphibians, grubs and leaves are easy to find as well. However, they need to be cautious of predators at all costs.

Predators

A kiwi has many predators like dogs, cats , stoats, and weasels. These are all predators of the kiwi. But occasionally, wild pigs will hunt down kiwis as well.
Sadly the kiwi is not fast enough to run away from these predators and they also can’t fly because their wings aren’t strong enough. But the kiwi can run as fast as a man which is a great advantage but won’t help them as much in the wild.


In conclusion, it is important to know the kiwis diet like what they eat, what they are and what predators they have so that we can do everything we can to save them from going extinct. Overall, the kiwi bird of New Zealand is an extraordinary bird that needs our help and hopefully they will stay around in the future for many generations that pass by.

Our Figurative Language Posters!

The Life Cycle Of A Sea Turtle🐢

I am learning to inform my audience through explanation

Have you ever been so fascinated about a reptile that has been here aeons before you have? Not Sharks ,Tuataras , the duck billed platypus or the saw fish... I’m talking about sea turtles! And this their life cycle. It all begins with an egg.

                                                                                           The female sea turtle will go back to the same beach where she started her cycle,

Go past the high tide line and into the perfect spot to lay her eggs.  Once she has, The eggs will be bericated in the deep sand. This will prevent predators coming and eating the eggs before they hatch.Roughly 20% of these eggs do not hatch, but the ones that do will start to venture to the ocean. This is called the young sea turtle stage.

Once the baby sea turtles are in the ocean , they are basically going into the hunger games. Like searching for food , Squirming away from predators etc. For shelter the baby sea turtles can hide/ rest under bits and bobs(seaweed) until they are strong enough to venture in the ocean by themselves. Whilst growing up, Sea turtles usually eat  seaweed, jellyfish, fish eggs and more they also eat these foods in the adulthood.

Finally, the adulthood! A sea turtle living its normal life, swimming free in the ocean. Swish Swoosh! Ooh this female sea turtle has come upon the breeding stage, where she’ll prepare to lay eggs. Again, she will go past the high tide, go into a cave looking place and lay her eggs. Once she has she will cover them with sand so that it’s not easy for predators to munch on them for lunch. The mother will now go back into the ocean to her everyday life.

Years and Years have gone by and it’s finally time for this mother sea turtle to have her eternal rest. Sea turtles are miraculous reptiles, that will live aeons after us. I’m glad you had an opportunity to read the document on your screen.

Abot City Jobs

I am learning to: write a narrative based on an image.

It was blustery weather in Abot city, but that didn’t stop Andiee the unemployed inventor from looking for a new job… it was four months since he got fired from his dream job at Inventorrz Headquarters as lead inventor. He was replaced by a more handsome, younger and smarter inventor.

Andiee scampered around town in his soggy leather boots looking for some work. It didn’t take him long to discover an old rusty shed that faintly said Mechanic’s Outlet in black paint. Even though being a mechanic wasn’t Andiee’s cup of tea he was willing to get at least ONE job.

Feeling anxious, Andiee pounded on the door like he was a zombie ready to eat a human brain that was locked inside. Within a split second he felt that the ground started to shake and the sound was getting louder and louder… Suddenly a mischievous shadow started to form under the door.

KKKKKKKKKKKKK….SSSSSSKKKKK RRRR AAKK!!! The door scratched on the ground making an unpleasant screak. Before long a meteor sized red rusty robot filled the hallway. The fascinated and petrified inventor asked “do….do…. do you have a job for me here?” unexpectedly he heard, “yes we do, what’s your profession?”

“Inventor,” Andiee said as the robot grinned “perfect!” said the robot.

Andiee finally got a job he desperately needed.

Pumpkin Soup

I am learning to inform my audience by sharing and entertaining moment.

Have you ever gone to someone else’s house and not like what they served you for dinner? Well I have… my parents, my sister and I entered the house of dinner nightmares. The horrible pumpkin scent filled the whole house, it was like I was standing in a pumpkin farm. I normally love going to my grandad’s house… just not this time.

“SIENA, DINNER!” Dad roared out like a lion, I started to creep near the dinner table like it was a long creepy dull hallway and the pumpkiny smell was the horror character. As I finally got the dinner table I saw the sickening - vomit worthy pumpkin soup. I sat in my seat with an uncomfortable vibe, as everyone else devoured theirs meals like hungry pumpkin monsters!

My hand was shaking like an earthquake had hit, sweat on my forehead, my heart pounding like drums. I just couldn’t put it in my mouth, even when I wanted to get it done and dusted!!

There I was finally about to eat it… ENOUGH

I ended up drinking like 50 litres of water, avoiding the pumpkin soup. I’m so glad I was able to avoid one spoon entering my mouth. I hate pumpkin soup and I still do to this day.

The Bug Lab!!!

Creepy crawlies , humming insects, different coloured
backs, scorpions in lollipops! , creepy sounds coming here and there! My brother running… WHO KNOWS WHERE?! The cold feeling going down my spine,
Learning more about them every time!
Ending the day with a lovely sorbet..
